Thanks for the kind words to BOB2 who's forgotten more about these subjects than I'll ever know.

Taxpayer: I was in college in the 60s and we had most of the rail network for passengers you describe. Supposedly, not enough "taxpayers" rode it so they created Amtrak which promptly curtailed most of the services.

The biggest lie Amtrak ever told Congress was that they could break even eventually. Been the source of all this unnecessary discord.
