Why not have a nuclear-powered locomotive - I remember in the 50's and 60's they were talking about a thing called SNAP - Small Nuclear Application of Power (or similar) and they had units small enough for planes, trucks, buses and cars - why not trains? That way, no wires, no smoke - even the nimbys couldn't squawk - a 200 ton mass of steel could easily surround a small nuke reactor and protect it from even the a-----es here in SoCal.
