Arguably the worst fault zone to be encountered is near San Fernando. It's a thrust block area caused by the jog in the San Andreas, Big chunks get twisted and squeezed, so it's a 'zone' rather than a 'crack'. If the tunnel were to NOT go via Rosamond, i.e.; to the west, um, someplace, that might be 'easier', except the mountains on the north of the SFV are 'gassy'. See the construction history of the Santa Barbara water tunnel.
The Atomic Locomotive was studied as far as preliminary design in the 50s. It made Popular Science mag and Model Railroader. One report was done in Utah [at a U I think] and can be found for download on line. But there were other great ideas in the 50s. One IIRC by an LA County supervisor , or ilk, proposed that the mountains be breached so that smog would be blown out into the desert. So how about a giant cut [using mainly spoons] that would avoid tunnels&curves, move smog, provide a straighter shot to Rosamond, since the project is still in the ' I dunno marty, whudda you wanna do?' stage
IIRC the major land development project is off Hwy 138 near Gorman. My farm friends tell me that Tejon Ranch has already agreed to put land in public hands in order to get development permission, but I dunno if the hwy 138 area is part of that
The point being, Palmdale makes no sense- gotta be Rosamond .
All this will set new School Records for fraud, mendacity, corruption, rate of pissing money away [adjusted for inflation] and incompetence.
Oh and last thought- the times article sez the Bj-Palmdale run will take around 19 minutes.
Did they come up with that by dividing crowmiles by 220 mph or is it just a POA?
