I can't deny any company that works wise and hard a decent profit. But, I think that now the stockholders/investors will expect to see this sustained. At the same time, the customers with start making noise about re-regulation. And of course, the unions will be in a strong negotiating position to make a case for a substantial raise.
American business has become so short sighted in my opinion. Companies and upper management aren't in it for the long haul, but how much they can make this year and collect our bonus/stock options/dividends.
UP would have been much smarter, in my opinion, to have lowered rates a little and made a substantially increased reinvestment back into the railroad. It would have lowered the profit, but would have still been impressive and placed the railroad n a better long term position.
BNSF - what can be said? As service failures increase the screaming will be getting louder from customers and politicians. UP needs to be careful because they could easily end up caught in BNSF's slow meltdown trying to absorb their lost traffic or any increase to due a better economy. And grain season is fast approaching ...
