If trucks paid the actual costs for the damage they do to the roads, based on weight and axle loading, they'd need to increase weight fees alone by over 400% to make up for the failure to increase fees for inflation, and the increased weights Congress has decided to allow on our roads over the last 25 years.
I think only sugar farmers get a better subsidy deal, and they have the Congressionally mandated socialist mandated sugar prices 21/2 times the world wholesale prices that we are required by Federal "law" to pay (as consumers in a supposedly "free market" economy?), and they have the ethanol subsidy to dirty, requiring urban drivers to use an additive that costs over 10 times as much as alternatives, supposedly for local CO2 and ozone reductions to give us "energy independence" and/or "clean air".
Yes, publicly subsidized trucking helps stockholders of trucking companies, and America has low shipping costs, which do benefit consumers to some degree, but Drew, you are so wrong and so off on the facts, as your employers fees do not even begin to cover public costs of truck damage (and added construction costs), and the rest of us do by paying more in car damage and higher gasoline taxes for the damage that the trucks do to our roads.
