Read the article again. It seems to say that EMD had a program to produce some kind of Tier 4 engine on EPA's schedule - article isn't clear whether it was 710-derived or something else - but that when Caterpillar took over they killed it. Now they get to sit on their hands watching GE suck up the orders. Not good for the folks at the shop if all they get to build over the next couple of years is a little export stuff. Will Cat even start a Tier 4 program now, or will they just abandon the locomotive business in a few years?
Is Metrolink still planning on getting new EMD passenger locomotives? I had heard rumors that they reduced their order a bit. Obviously, since that order has to be Tier 4, it won't be 710-engined. But since nobody else ordered EMD, will Metrolink stick with them and get orphans, or will they cut their losses and kill the EMD order in favor of whatever (was it Siemens?) the others are getting?
