SP/SSW purchased 240 SW1500s.

Approximately 60 were retired by SP before the merger, due derailment or collision damage, or because of major mechanical or electrical failures that were deemed not worth repairing.

In the first five years following the merger, UP retired approximately 70 more. About half of those had been out of service "pending disposition," going back to before the merger.
