While Roseburg Forest Products is one of the largest privately owned wood–products companies it's still a relatively small player in the whole of the U.S. and international forest and wood products industries. It's financial resources pales in comparison to the financial clout that is possessed by Fortress Investment Group LLC which is a publicly owned investment management firm providing services to pension funds, endowments and foundations, financial institutions, funds of funds and high net worth individuals. It manages hedge funds and publicly traded alternative investment vehicles. The firm invests in the public equity, fixed income, and alternative investment markets of the United States and across the globe. Fortress Investment Group was founded in 1998 and is based in New York City with additional offices in Dallas, Texas; San Diego, California; Hong Kong; London, United Kingdom; Rome, Italy; Frankfurt, Germany; Geneva, Switzerland; Toronto, Canada; and Sydney, Australia.
The political, financial power and influence that Roseburg Forest Products’ closely held interests, including the Ford family could bring to any local political/government policy discussion is quite small by comparison.
RailAmerica's stockholders approved the acquisition of by certain private equity funds managed by affiliates of Fortress Investment Group LLC., a prudent, rational business move that well serves the interest of RailAmerica and its shareholders. Fortress America has responsibilities to huge numbers of interests which include senior citizens, like me, who depend on their retirement income being well managed by mutual investment and pension funds like FIG. The closure of the Coos Bay CORP rail line and the curtailing of its operations over the Siskiyou pass, almost infinitesimally small components of FIG’s total portfolio, while a rail fan’s recreational horror, are sound business practices, assuring the protection of stockholders interests which is the first responsibility of any publicly traded enterprise.
FIG, RailAmerica and CORP represent free enterprise in action and sound financial and fiscal policy which is the essence of the American economic system, as unpalatable as that may be- to some few.
