Re: What Do Letters On Mileposts Represent?

Possible duplication of mile posts numbers within the same subdivision, would be one reason. Duplicate mile posts could cause confusion when a slow order is given. Thus, if the slow order is for MP 3 to MP 5, then a crew would know it's not at MP 3X to MP 5X.
Duplicate mile posts can come about due to combining previous subdivisions, mergers, or a few other things.
One example I can give is near Topeka, KS on Santa Fe. The original mile posts were numbered from Atchison, KS but then the railroad changed the subdivision to start at Holliday, KS and there was already a MP 50 and 51, so they changed the MPs from Atchison to 50X and 51X. Rather than change all the mile posts out for the remaining portion of the subdivision.
Using other letters other than X, might have other reasons.
