When Santa Fe added its North Track to Cajon Pass, because it was roughly two miles longer than the original South Track between Cajon and Summit, the North Track had mileposts with an "X" after each number to differentiate from the route's primary mileage count.
During my years in the Northeast (Uncle Dave can testify in greater detail on that region), I noticed several places that had mileposts with letters indicating the starting point of the mileage count, such as NYS&W mileposts with a "JC" after the numbers in reference to Jersey City.
On UP's Wallace Sub between Spokane, WA, and Plummer, ID, the section between Manito and Plummer has a "B" preceding the milepost numbers because it's on ex-MILW trackage that throws off the original UP mileage by a couple of miles.
