Well, on most roads they just use a number. These may be, as stated, to afford confusion in other areas.
On the SP everything was numbered AWAY from the City. Say you saw an MP 374 on the rails between SBA & LA. That would be 374 miles away from San Francisco.
The same system was used for train numbers. Even would be headed away from the City. Odd would be headed to the City.
Same for signal numbers. No. 222.2 would be a east signal at MP 222. No. 222.1 or 222.3 would be a west signal at Milepost 222.
