It was obvious that the bragging from Metrolink was BS- the crush zones didn't crush, so didn't come in to play.
Given the relative masses of the train and a pickup, that was never a question.
The pilot can extend to only NEAR the railtops , not below.
As the pickup was between the rails , off the paved xing,
the wreckage was trapped at the edge of the xing pavers under the pilot .
See the ICC wreck report on the Ft Wayne. A blown cylinder head flew to the opposing track, was hit by an EB pass train, caught the ties [ it otherwise would have cleared under the pilot] and wrecked both trains with several deaths.
Ramp the edges of crossings, and remember Murphy was an optimist.
