Actually...the NWP was originally built as an independent railroad. Here is the timeline:
Originally built as narrow gauge North Pacific Coast Railroad. (unknown year)
Purchased in 1902 by Eugene de Salba & John Martin.
Tracks were standard gauged and electrified in 1903.
Name changed to North Shore Railroad in 1903.
AT&SF gains control of North Shore Railroad in Dec. 1904.
AT&SF sells 50% of North Shore Railroad to SP in 1906.
Northwestern Pacific Railroad was formed in 1907, absorbing North Shore Railroad and several smaller railroads.
AT&SF sells remaining 50% of NWP to SP in 1927, giving SP full control over NWP.
Electric operations end on February 28, 1941.
