If they had done it right, they would have planned to run it right along I-5 and avoided the Valley population centers altogether. Adding miles and stops only lengthens the trip, making it less attractive to the primary, end-point users. For the San Joaquin cities, upgrade the BNSF to 110mph and build a connection to HSR south of Bakersfield.
