I was talking to a manager at the San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission this evening. Their long term plan is to continue the San Joaquins, but with more stops and to interface with high speed rail at several places, just like other countries do it.

This provides service to more people without slowing down the high speed line. It is difficult to do this if the high speed line is down I-5. It is too far away for the kind of service they propose.
