I still say that routing via the "Highway 99" cities is the long way around, and the lengthened running time makes the trip less attractive to end-point users, which will make up the most significant traffic base. Even if HSR made Fresno a viable suburb of SF or LA, that would take a long time to evolve. Even if HSR gets built, they still have to get people to patronize it.
