For what it is worth, Super Power Steam Locomotives by Richard Cook on page 64 quotes an SP engineer saying, "I had one of the Daylight engines on the Santa Fe Railway one time on account of a washout on our line. I got up to 90 miles an hour; they were balanced for 110, but of course our own speed limit on the Southern Pacific was 80. They rode just as well at 90 miles an hour as they did at 60."
