I was on a commute train around 1979 with a P30CH in the lead. We clocked him at 82 mph for a mile between Mountain View and Sunnyvale, which included some accel and decel, so presumably the top speed was even higher.

As a young kid, I approached the engineer after arriving at San Jose and asked how fast he was going back there. The answer was as you'd expect,"Seventy!" The conductor laughed and said, "We were clocking you back there."
