Followup on the San Joaquin area SP speeds: some of the Steffee speed listings for SP were on the Westside line (around Dos Palos iirc - need to find the box of old TRAINS to see if I still have any of the speed survey issues in one piece), which isn't even complete any more. Apparently some San Joaquin Daylights ran that way to Fresno, bypassing Modesto/Merced etc. Most apparently did run the main line, though, given a number of listings in the Lathrop vicinity. Not sure where they ran north/west of Tracy - did they run up to Martinez, or did they switch over to the Altamont line? Remember, this was in the 1940s/50s/early 60s, when the SJ Valley was still very country rather than the sub/exurban it is now at the north end, and most people actually knew to look before using a rural grade crossing.
