Re: SMART pay vs. housing cost

I don't see how SMART can ever succeed financially,
because their trains do not go where most people
need to go -- San Francisco, and SMART is assuming
that many people will ride, even though that will
force most people to transfer to a ferry (or a bus?).
But SMART is completely ignoring a basic axiom of
transportation planning that people hate to have to
transfer from one transit vehicle to another. So, SMART
Board -- don't make your passengers do that, or you won't
have many passengers at all. Then what will you do?
I don't know why I forgot to consider the ridiculously
high costs of housing here in the SF Bay Area when I
was reading about SMART. Methinks the whole house of
cards will come tumbling down because SMART will never
be able to pay anyone (except their Board) enough to
afford to live here. No engineers = no trains will run.
And -- until I read the article -- I had no idea that
the SMART Board was trying hard to violate federal law
by NOT having 2 engineers in the cab if the shift is more
than6 hours long. So -- the second person will NOT be a
qualified engineer? SHAME on the SMART Board for trying
to do that!
Give it up, SMART Board. Your fancy new system will never work.
It can't.
