WOW !!! Sounds to me like the railroads used the same $#!thole hotels the LTL trucking companies used !!! Noise was a big deal for drivers running nights, the blackout curtains too although the bedspread would also work there. I recall The El Rancho ( El Rauncho or La Cuckaracha to us ) in N. Sac or maybe Bryte, complete with Murphy Beds and moving dark spots on the floor & counter when you turned on the light.
Even today, BNSF crews laying over in Vancouver, WA., use the Jubitz Truckstop Hotel across the river in Portland,OR. Jubitz, though, is a really nice place, to the point of being a bit too expensive for truckers on a multi - day layover to cover with just the company - provided Per Diem.
