North Coast Railroad repair costs closer to $4 billion

The $700 million estimate to repair this road is ancient. Steel and concrete costs have soared. Grade crossing requirements have changed. Many of the trestles and bridges need to be completely replaced due to neglect. Energy costs make it prohibitive to haul freight back down to Fairfield to hit the cross country line. The Eel River is now protected requiring EIR's. Perhaps the road around Humboldt Bay will be restored but the Eel River will never see a train again.
