Aren't railroads in river canyons inherently expensive to maintain? Feather River, Royal gorge ,Flathead etc? That is the price paid for reduction in grade on the ROW. The fact that those railroads maintained those routes was that they were necessary to make money. That is the ONLY reason that those route exist(ed).
