Back in the late nineties I worked on several studies and reviewed several studies that attempted to estimate the unfunded maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation needs added up to about a 1 cent increase in the gas tax, every year, for twenty years. We didn't do anything, now almost 20 years later we are increasing it by 12 cents, enough over ten years to fund only about 1/3 of the estimated 150 billion, to maintain our existing system in a good state of repair.
Had we been wise enough to raise it a penny a year we would have already been working on that list, and probably would not have noticed as gas prices jump back and forth, But since we can't come to any compromise to decide to do anything nowadays, ever since now large core factions of both parties, became hostages to zealots, idiots, nitwits, and blabbering fools, we find ourselves finally able to ram through what seems like a drastic increase...... that will still only do about 1/3 of the job......?
Well, I hear some of you @#$%& and moaning and calling for a "Proposition to rescind it!"....... What an idiotic idea, you are probably mentally about 12 years old from that comment, and no more than 40 in actual age, since you seem to have no effing clue how old these roads are getting to be, where they came from, or who built them.
We buried our heads in the sand, did nothing because we have been held hostage by factions that hate "evil gubmint" and those awful taxes, or hate "cars for wrecking the planet, and evil freeways are really bad for the air, dude....." nonsensical horse manure spread by idiots on both the left and right.
And, if a termed out Republican can pull his head out of his ass, and vote to support this, and actually help improve commuter rail services for his "gridlocked" constituents, for a change, I say good. A politician actually doing something for the folks that are stuck in traffic that voted for him, ain't that the most corrupt thing you've ever heard of,.....right?
I saw Jeff Stone's editorial whining about this, and how his people have to "drive further" to work" (using up more highway/freeway space and maintenance, not less....?)so they shouldn't have to pay..... But, given the growth in that Distrrict, I have a bet that good old Jeff (someone who's very Riverside County freeway projects I've been personally involved with finding funding for...) will not miss taking a dime for his District..... Go figure?
So, if you imbecilic political puritans must rant and rave with this hyperbolic rage about the corruption of this good old fashioned political "horse trading" to fund the roads you drive on, then, it would make me real happy, if you make sure you don't use them......... Think about it, if you stop driving on those roads, you won't have to buy any gas, and pay no taxes at all. Or maybe, we can have the tooth fairy pay for all of our roads, in your fantasy world.
