An AC traction motor is a three phase AC motor in packaging that a locomotive can use.

A DC traction motor has four field coils and four interpole coils in the traction motor frame. Inside rotates the armature that is powered by four sets of brushes.
In motoring the power travels throught both coils and armature.
In dynamic the power from the diesel and generator/alternator travel onlt throught the coils, providing excitation. The rotation of the motor generates electrical curent in the armature, which through switch gear is connected to the dynamic brake grids.
