CSX is now running Double Stack service from their North Baltimore Ohio facility through DC and to the south with the opening of the new Virginia Avenue Tunnel in DC. In Baltimore, the Howard Street tunnel remains a barrier to double stack or multi-level traffic. A lot of work went into lining up funding and studies (including a major expansion of the Port of Baltimore) until it was stopped by Hunter Harrison who saw no immediate need to compete with motor carriers along I-95 from Florida to the New York City area. With his passing there may be renewed interest.
