When I was there years ago to train some engineers on grade territory, the tunnels were fine. Old man Spreckels built the pike so a brakeman could stand on top of a car and ride through the tunnels.

The trouble was the track. The tunnels were full of water, pumping, the ballast didn't hold the track to center line. They had so many drops to either side you hoped you would not derail. All we had were low gons.
