In talking about snow in some of the above threads, I can tell you first hand, its a real "problem".

I was on a helper out of Ashland coming up the Siskiyous around MP 415. We lost an engine and so did the head end and we stalled. Well there was a set of lite engines in the hole at Siskiyou on their way to Ashland. Long story short, we flagged them down on our point and they helped us up to Siskiyou. They cut off at the west switch and they went back down the siding. We made our air test and had just started to move when we went into emergency. I had felt something about the same time , behind us. Turned out that the 4 units either high centered on the fuel tanks or the shoes froze but they slide right out at the east switch and got into the side of our train.

At that time, the SP used a ballast regulator to get rid of the snow between the rails. It cost too much to run a flanger. You always used your jam in snow every once and awhile to keep the shoes and wheels warm before you were going to stop and switch.

As far as reversing the engines, I am sure SJ Hogger remembers the GGM going west out of Santa Sue one morning in the 70s. They had green signals and were moving right along down hill, 1.0 %, when they cam around the slight curve at Simi. There was the local heading out of the storage track onto the main. The engineer held down the whistle and big holed the train. When he did, he lost the PC so lost his dynamics. He could see he wasn't going to get stopped so he threw them in reverse. For some reason, everyone was living right that day and the local backed back in, clearing their engine from the main by inches. The GGM ran thru the main line switch but still went on down quite a ways before they got stopped. The short "happy" period after the near miss didn't last long. You had the local stuck in the storage track, 4 units with 16 axles with huge flat spots and the main line switch run through. Thoughts of not saying anything, went out the door.

I think they tried to fire the Gs engineer for the wheels rather than thanking him missing the local, yes by inches.
