If you noted in the news footage, the underframe of the ML car was still intact - perhaps a "collision post" system like the locomotives have should be considered for those commuter cars as well as an ATS-type system - this would aloow a bit more "surviveability" for the cars. What has not been considered was that the setting sun obscured the signal and made observation of the aspect impossible - cab repeater signals would be good and not overly costly to install when an ATS system is also done. The "unhurt survivor" also state he was facing rearwards and perhaps the old Pullman-style flip-over seats should be re-introduced to force riders to face the safer rearward direction... just some thoughts. The News media should also be required to take some Railroad 101 classes, I also really got in a snit over the ditsy newscasters (in LA) referring to the cars as "trains" and similar lapses - perhaps someone should give them small prep-books that explain railroad terminology.
