I was watching and waiting for guns to kill more people than cars. But then the price of gas went down and the miles driven went up and cars now kill about 50% more people than guns in the US. Interestingly the number of pedestrian involved accidents has gone up only 10% or so but the number of pedestrian deaths has risen 60%. There are lots of theories about this but it has been noted that this is not so in Europe.
The difference seems to be the increase in pickup trucks and SUVs. They have more power and so tend to be driven faster. They also have an almost flat front. Instead of hitting pedestrians (and cyclists) in the legs and throwing them up on the hood they hid them in the torso, throw them forward and then run them over.
Some say the problem is walking (or driving) while texting (or talking on the phone). However there has been an increase in the number of older people killed. Older people walk slower, like those on phones, so these people were killed because they were walking while old.
