The original Starlight on Amtrak was 3 days a week. It rapidly became a "rainbow" train with equipment from all over. Initial route north from Oakland was via the West Side line north of Davis, same as the SP used to use. When the Starlight went daily it moved to Sacramento before heading north.

South of Oakland, there was a short train (usually baggage, automat, some coaches, and occasionally a lounge - basically a ghost of the final-years SP Daylight) on the Starlight's "off" days that made Coast service between there and LA daily. Source: I rode both of them between the Bay Area and SLO.
