It is speculation that the engineer ran the red light on purpose. Yes, he had 2 yellow warning lights. But then the train stopped at a station to drop off and pick up passengers. Because Metrolink is cheap, actually VERY cheap, there is no repeater yellow light at the station, reminding the train's engineer that there is a red light around the next curve. There was a similar accident in Silver Spring Maryland in 1996. Metrolink could have learned from that and added the repeater (or reminder) light. But as expected, Metrolink chose not to do so.
