I assume the Des Moines streetcar switches worked the same as other streetcar switches. There's a sensor in the overhead. When the streetcar driver wants to go straight through the switch he coasts. If he wants to take the diverging route, he adds power just before entering the switch. The sensor in the overhead senses whether power is being drawn. If it is, that activates a solenoid in the track switch which lines it for the diverging turnout. Otherwise it's spring loaded to the straight position.
