And you don't think the railroads wouldn't battle that in the courts for a couple of decades?
Conrail was a double-edged sword. It improved efficiency but a lot of shippers got screwed when they had the misfortune of having their facility located on one of the many routes that Conrail chose to abandon. And doesn't it seem like everything the Government touches turns to caa caa? Do we really want a freight rail system that's run like Amtrak?
Although they're having some hiccups right now, by-and-large America's privately-operated freight railroads are the envy in places like Europe and Japan when it comes to the amount of freight they're handling. Traffic managers and transportation strategists in those countries can only dream of such figures and statistics moving by rail.
