Per conversation with BNSF engineer yesterday @ the MilWest meet in Kent: The washouts @ Martin are being filled as we speak; work trains running over the pass from Veasey pit near Cumberland. I would concur with almo that BNSF probably plowed out the F.S. road from I - 90 to at least the Mosquito creek turnoff to Martin.
Regarding access to Lester, remember the F.S. road over Stampede Pass only brings you to the Tacoma Watershed gate @ Friday Creek; you have to walk in the last 1 & 1/2 miles to Lester townsite. This is still legal public access until you go West past the oil plug & " LESTER " signboard. A large NO TRESPASSING sign on the South ( Green River ) side of the tracks, and a small sign on a pole on the North side, are your limits, unless you are an Indian. THIS IS ENFORCED BY ONSITE TACOMA WATERSHED COPS, AND THEY ARE A$$HOLES !!! As noted by up833, there isn't much left to see; the old F.S. stable & barn, a few foundations & the new wye. A bridge over a side creek @ the East switch is a good photo prop for Westbounds; a thru truss bridge @ the West end is visible but OFF LIMITS, as my wife & I were so rudely informed of by Officer Lovelace. After making previous contact with us as we were walking around, he then left, only to JUMP out of the bushes after we walked past the small no trespassing sign on the North side of the tracks. Good thing I wasn't packing iron,( cougar sightings were reported at the time), or someone could of been shot.
If you really feel the need to see for yourself, wait for a warm, sunny summer day to go; bring a picnic lunch, and sit 5 feet East of the no trespassing signs, just to torment the cops !!!
