Kinda creepy that the Bertram Wreck happened within a few miles of the infamous Tortuga Wreck of 1938. SP employees & passengers died in that deal, and a new rule was instigated regarding brakemen keeping a minimum distance from the switchstand during a meet.
Back in The Day - Penn Central dispatchers would route the nightly N.E. Corridor Mail Train through the crossovers just West ( maybe TT South ? ) of the Hudson River tunnel, just to " Keep the Rust off the rail & overhead wire. "
A question for Dave - Did the WP Hayward Wreck happen at the Industrial Parkway overpass ? I'm not trying to be a ghoul, but when I drove for Conway Western Express one of my regular overnight line runs was Irvine to Hayward, at the Industrial Pkwy. exit off I-880, and I recall a local CWX driver telling me about " ... the gouges in the pavement from the train wreck. " I never wanted to look...
