To clarify a point or two:

I have no idea how the CTC was/is configured for the siding at Bertram (i.e. presence or absence of track circuits therein). Other posts have been a bit ambiguous about this, which is the reason why I gave two different examples of A signal display for entering a siding.
> And with cars stored, it should have been locked into a red over red indication...
Only if the siding has been equipped with track circuits. Common practice when storing cars or parking a train in a controlled siding is to tag the levers controlling the power switches at each end of the siding, but there have been no indications in other posts that this was done.
