Apparently there was such an accumulation of rust on the rails that the stored cars "disappeared" from the CTC machinery as they lost continuity in creating a shunt.
Years ago the B&M had a bad collision because a RDC car had been using sand, shunting capability was lost, and the ABS system thought the track was unoccupied when, in reality, the opposite was true.
