It is understandable that one would expect signalized crossings to be safer than those with passive warning devices. However the data show that more fatalities occur at signalized crossings - undoubtably because they pose a higher risk, perhaps due to greater vehicular traffic or higher road speeds. Below is a count of the number of fatalities at crossigs from FRA for the first two months of 2007. While it is only two months of data it reflects the normal trend. Source: [
