UP, Oregon county criticize another railroad

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. (AP) -- Union Pacific Railroad and the Lake County commissioners say the Modoc Northern Railroad has violated its contract and must end operations.
A notice from Omaha, Neb.-based Union Pacific did not say what parts of the contract Modoc Northern violated. Lake County Commissioner Ken Kestner told the Herald and News of Klamath Falls that problems with Modoc Northern included poor maintenance and financial mismanagement. Kestner says Modoc Northern wrote the county a $45,000 check that bounced last fall.
The railroad took perlite ore and other products from Lakeview to Alturas and by Union Pacific-owned track from Alturas to Klamath Falls.
The telephone number Modoc Northern lists on its Web site was disconnected.
