This whole fiasco just proves what we already knew...a class I LEASING an operation to a shortline isn't really a shortline at all, especially if the "shortline" is a UP "Handling Carrier" which means the shortline is a transparrent entity where the "shortline's" stations are published as UP stations.
The only way around the UP "bully treatment" is for the shortlne to PURCHASE the line rather than lease.
The MNRR was destined for failure from the very beginning due to the amount of trackage vs customer base/location...the Lake County was doomed in that they had to interchange through the Modoc Northern thereby reducing each carrier's revenue since the UP only pays a certain amount per car regardless of the shortline's cost of doing business, in this case MNRR/UP vs LCRR/MN/UP.
Once UP takes over operation of the MN all the way to Alturas to interchange with the Lake County, they will soon realize just what an asset their "shortline Partners?" are to their bottom line.
NO, the Oregon Pacific IS NOT interested in operating the Modoc Northern
