Tamper - used to compact ballast in the track structure. Raising of the tracks done either with track jacks or jacks attached to the machine.

Liner - used to align track horizontally. The larger tampers are combination tamper-liner.

Ballast Regulator - used to spread ballast on the track structure. A broom is used to final sweep the tracks and is either attached to the regulator or is a seperate machine.
