This was a light engine consist from Tucson to West Colton, part shop movement and part returning stay LA Basin Hauler units. Most of the units were either moving DIC or had defective DB's (including the lead unit).
When they crested the grade west of Beaumont and engineer transferred into DB, he got nothing. So instead of transferring back out of DB or simply moving the Independent handle to the application zone, he and the conductor ran back through the units, trying handbrakes. Whether they were successful depends upon one's definition of success. The units eventually did stop. . . from derailing in different places after the consist broke apart.
