Small world Steve, I was there the same month. Just checked my slides and I shot 1077 on June 10th.
The guy standing next to her @ Diamond is Pete McGovern. He gave me a ride too. Both injectors on for several miles while on that grade. We met Crown-Zellerbach's loads headed by their 8 stack Baldwin diesel while on the way to Camp. The brakie, Jack McAdam, slept up on the tender once we got going.
Your black & while photo taken just leaving the yard @ Diamond?
I remember Pete walking me up the rails some and showing me a birds nest between the ties. He got the tower operator to back us out over the E&N main and then lined us out another rail so's not to disturb the nest. Pete was also the most precise engineer I ever encountered, a
real master at his craft.
