(1) PNWRailfan is entirely correct; we must get together for a beer sometime, as there are only two of us. (2) As I recall, HSR looked at the Grapevine and decided that it was unfeasible. However, they were contemplating a lightning-quick train -- the Palmdale-Sylmar stretch is rated at 170 mph, for example -- and it is an open question whether a slower train might not be feasible. (3) The basic principle of the route choice, from very early on, was "follow the UP," and as UP went by way of Palmdale, so did HSR. At some point, LA asked for a stop at the future Palmdale airport, and HSR said, sure, why not?
