1) Lewis & Clark Explorer RDC's on ex - SP & S Portland to Astoria, OR, 3 times
2) Amtrak North Coast Hiawatha from Billings to Seattle just 2 months before it was cut in 1979
3) Amtrak Coast Starlight from Seattle to Los Angeles on the same trip; SFe Pleasure Dome & SP lunch counter diner !!!
4) Amtrak Broadway Ltd. from Philly to Chicago, then SW Chief to Los Angeles in 1985. The Slumbercoach & Horseshoe Curve were great, losing an F - 40 barely out of Chicago & 6 hours late into LA were not.
5) Amtrak Desert Wind / SFZ r/t Los Angeles to Denver, then Rio Grande Zephyr r/t Denver to Salt Lake in April, 1983. As luck would have it, I was on the last RGZ to make SLC, due to the Thistle Landslide. As fate would have it, I returned the next day to Denver via UP Sherman Hill, at 55 MPH. This meant I missed the descent of the Front Range into Denver, AND had to see Wonderful Wyoming 3 times in a week !!!
6) Pacific Railroad Society's Mountain Outin trip over Tehachapi in 1979. The 1st one when they resumed after 8 years of freights only over the pass. Aside from a San Diegan trip earlier that year, this was my 1st real train trip; it gave me the bug I still have today.
7) 4449 World's Fair Daylight in 1984, from Phoenix to Los Angeles w/overnight in Yuma. Spent both days standing in Vestibule 5, drinking Henry Weinhard beer & eating bugs. Watching 1stCajon pass out in his dinner was memorable, but the friendships I made on this trip have endured all the years between, making this the trip I'm SOOOOOOO glad I made...
