Three trips in 2001 come to mind:
June 2001 -- Portland to Wishram and back through the Columbia River Gorge behind SP 4449.
Also June 2001 -- "Coast Starlight" to Sacramento; "California Zephyr" to Chicago; "Three Rivers" to Philadelphia. Crossing the Cascades, Donner, Soldier Summit and the Rockies all in daylight, with SNOW in the Rockies (in mid-June!!!), AND photographing the last real warbonnet F units in Sacramento (during my morning layover -- they were parked outside at CSRM) AND a UP Big Boy/Centennial combo in Omaha (they were parked at the old Union Station across from the Amtrak depot, before moving on to Kenefick Park) AND former CB&Q CZ sleeper-observation "Silver Solarium" while backing into Chicago Union Station (it was in the coach yard).
September 2001 -- My first full NEC Washington-New York trip, going from D.C. Union Station to NYC Penn Station for the American Red Cross (working the 9/11 Pentagon and the 9/11 World Trade Center disaster responses). Before then, I had ridden several times from Philadelphia to Washington and back, but had NEVER ridden the corridor between Philly and New York.
