I, for one, always prefer flannel, bootcut jeans, and steel-toed boots and a railroad-herald cap or a Kromer hat.
However I see numerous railfans seem to not. Obviously this perpetuates the stereotype of foamers, garbed in recreational dress for a not-so-recreational job. Apparently, they seem to think that it's like Disneyland, that everything's safe and whatnot. It just conveys their complacency and their naïvetê perfectly.
As a volunteer conductor at the Orange Empire Railway Museum, when I see people thinking that the railroad, an occupation of hazard for those complacent, is as idiot-proof as Disneyland I am irked beyond belief. This habit of recreational garb amongst railfans also is one of my biggest pet peeves.
(End rant)
