There is another missing piece of information in the current "bash CSRM" thread, and that is that the California State Railroad Museum carries on its work in spite of, not because of, the state government. The vast majority of activities put on by the museum happen due to the work of museum volunteers, who have donated over 2 million hours since the museum was opened. Most of the operating expenses come from the museum foundation, not the taxpayers, and those dollars are earned by excursion revenue from a volunteer-run excursion line, the Sacramento Southern Rail Road. The State provides overall leadership(?)and policy guidance, which admittedly leaves a lot to be desired at times. When the State steps out of the way, the museum volunteers can accomplish miracles. People who share Drew Jacksich's views of the museum are entitled to those opinions, but they risk pissing off several hundred fellow railfans who dig in regularly to make things happen in spite of poor policies and weak leaders. I've been volunteering in track maintenance at CSRM for 15 years, and I also donate hard-earned dollars to CSRMF each year to help pay for stuff the state won't buy. As I like to say, "If you aren't part of the solution, you are part of the problem."
