They're more "put out" than you may realize. You don't show up at the roundhouse and say "I want to volunteer... When's the next run? I'd like to fire the engine." Well, OK, maybe some folks do, but it doesn't work that way.

You get the dirty, greasy, menial jobs. You get to spend your time and money to get there, buy your own lunch, and come home dirty and tired. If you're lucky, and you put in enough hours, you may get to ride the next run. Trust me, it's a helluva lot easier to buy a ticket and probably cheaper too.

Yes, they do it because they enjoy it, but don't think it's all fun.
